Lake
Baringo
Back

Blue sky, gorges, cliffs, and wildlife. One-hour drive North of Lake Bogoria, lies beautiful fresh water lake of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is dotted with several small islands; Ol Kokwe is the largest, being an extinct volcano with several hot springs and fumaroles, some of which have precipitated Sulphur deposits. Lake Baringo is fed by a number of rivers, but fascinatingly, scientists have yet to confirm where exactly outlet is. Recent flooding has caused rising water levels and unfortunately several tourist facilities have been destroyed. However, the case the Lake is still a bird’s paradise with over 500 species records from the iconic African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron, Kingfishers, Nighjars, Owls, Palearctic and Intra Africa migrants occurring between November-April. Fishing is prominent in the lake with 7 fish types occurring; Nile Tilapia, Nile Perch, Cat fish and African Lungfish among others. The area is also home to Hippo, Crocodile, Zebra, Klipspringer, Grant's gazelle, Chandler's Mountain Reedbuck, and the rare Greater Kudu among others. Relaxing in the open blue sky and counting thousands of stars at night, viewing the beauty of Gibraltar Volcanic hills, gorges and cliff is an amazing experience.
