Pink carpet. The 34km long and 3.5km wide Great Rift Valley Soda Lake is characterized by Siracho Escarpments and green algae along it’s rocky shores where 2 million lesser and greater flamingoes occur. On the western shores, hot springs and geysers spur boiling water enshrouding the area with mystical steam that is believed to cure skin diseases. North of Nakuru to the base of Rift Valley you will find Lake Bogoria covering 30 sq km. The Lake is an important nesting ground for the flamingos and in the shallow ends thousands of mud nests can be seen. Designated a RAMSAR SITE to protect wetland and surrounding wildlife. Spotted Hyena, Caracal, Greater Kudu, Warthog, Klipspringers and Dikdik occur here. The Kesubo Swamp, North of the lake is birders paradise, holding Kenya’s record for the largest number of bird species recorded in an hour, (96 species). The reserve remarkably hosts over 350 bird species. For birders; a visit to the lake between November-April is perfect timing, this coincides with from Palearctic migrants and Intra Africa migrants as well breeding season when many species are nesting.
