Rhough water classic birding destination. Derived from Maa Language meaning “rough water” due to high waves, it’s the highest of the Great Rift Valley lakes resting at 1884m above sea level. Freshwater shores fringed with papyrus swamps, yellow acacias and past volcanic remnants together with hippos lingering just on the shallows and hundreds of melodious singing birds, offers memorable experiences. Located North West of Kenya’s capital city, the lake is fed by River Malewa giving life to thousands of wetland and terrestrial birds and animal. Cormorants, pelicans, Darter, Storks, Kingfishers, Herons, Snipes, Sandpiper, Jacanas, Bishops, Weavers, Fiscals, Warblers, hawks and migratory birds call it home. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in and around the lake with fishing fish eagle being iconic. Cray fish and Tilapia are abundant in the fresh waters. The lake is designated a RAMSAR SITE. The lake attracts game animals i.e. Buffalos, giraffes, zebras, impalas, waterbucks and wildebeest; and white and black colobus are seen jumping from tree to tree.
