Nothern special seven. A journey to Africa’s unique flora and fauna is located in the 165 sq.km Samburu National Reserve in the dry Northern Kenya. The Samburu Savanna Plains is separated from Buffalo Springs NR by main water source river-The Ewaso Nyiro River. Downstream is Shaba National Reserve. The famous “Samburu Special Five” Somali ostrich, Vulturine Guineafowl, Desert Warthog, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe and Beisa Oryx makes this reserve very special. The reserve is also home to elephants, warthogs, hippos, olive baboons, antelopes and gazelles and predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and crocodiles. ‘Kamunyak’, the miracle lioness that adopted the baby oryx was as a resident in the reserve. Africa Wild dog and critically endangered pancake tortoise sightings are also an attraction in the reserve. Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded, including species from the riverine forests and northern bush country. Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon are species of global conservation concern occur in the reserve as well as Vultures, Eagles, Eagle-owls, Sunbirds, Bee-eaters, Flycatchers, Cisticolas, Woodpeckers and Hornbills. Five vulnerable bird species; Yellow-billed Ox-pecker, African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed Vulture and Martial Eagle occur here. Private conservancies offer night game drives, nature walks, mountain biking, big cat tracking, and camelback safaris.
